I don’t like cleaning at the best of times and I do it because I have to, not because I enjoy it. My favourite cleaning quote is “I dust with a glance” – I wish! Spring-cleaning is normally done around March and April – can you imagine what I am thinking when I get to this time of year?
However, my favourite time of the year is March because it is a month that connects winter and spring with the weather changing between really cold and warm and spring-like. Nature springs into life, daffodils, crocuses, and tulips – an array of colour all around us. The clocks go an hour forward, days are longer giving us lighter evenings, and we see more sun that gives us more energy than in the months of a cold and dark winter.
So how do I connect a household chore I don’t like doing to the time of the year I love?
I am more motivated to do my housework and I actually enjoy it, the windows are open letting in fresh air and I want to do jobs like cleaning windows, washing curtains and even start to sort my clothes out – what to keep and what can go to the charity shop. It gives me a great feeling when I have finished and I am so happy with the results.
How does spring-cleaning help our well being?
The dictionary definition of “spring-cleaning” is “cleaning a house or room thoroughly”. However, *the term, “spring-cleaning”, is also used metaphorically for any kind of heavy duty cleaning. A time when someone gets his or her affairs in order could be said to be doing some spring-cleaning. A time of new beginnings – perhaps people are happier knowing that summer is around the corner. This feeling gives us motivation to do things that we have kept putting off until tomorrow.
Following on from our New Year Resolutions this is a great time of the year to do some personal spring-cleaning for ourselves – a time to consider clearing our minds and getting rid of old habits. A time to reflect, take a fresh look and get a new perspective. By doing this you are making a personal investment in your life and the results will be amazing – just think how happy you will be with the results?
